When your doctors need to see if there are any blockages in the arteries that supply blood to your heart, a cardiac catheterization can help. It enables your care team to take moving pictures of your heart and the surrounding blood vessels. This diagnostic test is often used when heart disease is suspected. It can also be done on an emergency basis if you have symptoms of a heart attack. If a blockage is found in your coronary arteries, a procedure called an angioplasty can be performed immediately to remove the blockage.
A cardiac catheterization is a minimally invasive procedure - this means that everything is done through a very small incision.
The Cardiac Catheterization Lab at UR Medicine Heart & Vascular is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We offer many procedures that are not available anywhere else in the Rochester region. Our doctors perform a high volume of many procedures, and research shows that centers which perform the highest volume of a procedure generally have the best outcomes.
Notably, UR Medicine was also the first facility in the region to perform coronary stents and angioplasty. As part of a medical center that’s actively involved in the latest heart and vascular research, we’re also able to consistently provide our patients with the most advanced and safest procedures.
