Highland Hospital Expands Bariatric Surgery Services to Finger Lakes Region

Collaboration with Thompson Health Brings New Benefits to Patients

Tuesday, October 1, 2013

Highland Hospital, the region’s leading provider of bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, is expanding its bariatric services to the Finger Lakes region in partnership with University of Rochester Medical Center affiliate Thompson Hospital.
In this new collaboration with Thompson, patients preparing for bariatric surgery who live in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier areas will be offered a new benefit: they’ll be able to complete their nutrition counseling sessions and medical testing/lab work at Thompson Hospital rather than at Highland Hospital’s Bariatric Surgery Center in Rochester.

Highland will host its first bariatric surgery informational seminar in Canandaigua at 6 p.m. Thursday, October 10 at Thompson Hospital, 350 Parrish St., Canandaigua. To register, please call (585) 341-0366 or visit www.bariatricsurgery.urmc.edu
William E. O’Malley, M.D., Director of Bariatric Surgery, will host the seminar. Dr. O’Malley – a world-renowned bariatric surgeon – has helped thousands of patients in the region achieve lasting weight loss through bariatric surgery. He will provide an overview of the different types of surgery. A bariatric program coordinator will explain the surgical process and the integral role lifestyle and diet changes play in the process.

“We are very excited to collaborate with Thompson to offer patients in this region enhanced services,” says Dr. O’Malley “Our bariatric surgery program has a very high rate of success because of the thorough preparation patients receive prior to surgery. This includes meetings with nutrition counselors and appointments for medical tests and lab work. Enabling patients to do some of these pre-surgical tasks at Thompson saves them time, effort and travel dollars. And it enables them to receive the same high-quality services in a setting they’re familiar with at Thompson.”
About 80 to 90 percent of bariatric surgery patients achieve successful weight loss. Bariatric surgery is an option for:
·                Those who are at least 100 pounds overweight,
·                Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more,
·                Or have a BMI of 35 or more and are experiencing obesity-related health conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
Highland performs more bariatric surgeries than any hospital in the region. It regularly offers free informational sessions in Rochester; the October event is the first in Canandaigua.
