Doctor to Speak About Doctor-Patient Communication at 2017 Sischy Lecture

Danielle Ofri, M.D., Ph.D., will deliver the 2017 Sischy Lecture on Monday, October 2 at 6 p.m. at the Memorial Art Gallery. Her talk, “What Patients Say, What Doctor’s Hear (and Vice Versa),” will focus on doctor-patient communication and how refocusing the conversation between doctors and patients can improve health outcomes.
Dr. Ofri is an Associate Professor of Medicine at New York University School of Medicine and a physician at Bellevue Hospital, the oldest public hospital in the country. She is also the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Bellevue Literary Review.
The author of a number of books about the world of medicine, Dr. Ofri’s latest book is also titled “What Patients Say; What Doctors Hear.” She writes regularly for the New York Times and Slate magazine about the doctor-patient relationship and has had essays featured in the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, The Atlantic, the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet, CNN and on National Public Radio.
She has given TED talks on Deconstructing Perfection and Fear: A Necessary Emotion for Doctors, and has also performed stories for The Moth.
Dr. Ofri received her Ph.D. in pharmacology from NYU School of Medicine. She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a recipient of an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Curry College in Boston.
The Ben Sischy, M.D. Visiting Scholar in Humane Medicine Lecture was created in 1991 as a tribute to Dr. Ben Sischy who helped establish the department of Radiation Oncology at Highland Hospital and was chief of the program for many years. His career was based on his beliefs in the importance of quality patient care, innovative research and dedicated treatment. He is credited with pioneering many new approaches to cancer treatment in a community hospital setting.
