Colleen T. Fogarty, M.D., MSC, Associate Chair for Interprofessional Practice and Education, and Medical Director at Highland Family Medicine with the University of Rochester/Highland Hospital Department of Family Medicine has been selected by the Association of Departments of Family Medicine (ADFM) for a year-long fellowship program that provides academic leadership development for those interested in being a chair or considering that as a potential career direction.
The program includes a Fellowship project, shared with colleagues through a venue at the ADFM Winter meeting, formal mentorship from a Fellowship Advisor, and participation on the ADFM Chairs’ listserv during the Fellowship year and one year after. It also includes participation in two back-to-back ADFM Winter meetings and some extra programming, such as a Fellowship Workshop, an in-person New Chairs’ and Fellows’ Fall Workshop, and webinars throughout the year. Dr. Fogarty’s Fellowship project is “Developing a Departmental Mission, Vision, and Plan for Interprofessional Education (IPE) at Highland Family Medicine.”
Dr. Fogarty completed a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at Cornell University and earned her medical degree at the University of Connecticut, School of Medicine. She completed her family medicine residency and chief residency at the University of Rochester. Dr. Fogarty has additional training in Family Systems from the University of Rochester and a Master of Science in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the Boston University School of Public Health. She has spent much of her career in community health center practice, both rural and urban.
Dr. Fogarty’s publication record includes both empirical and creative work. Her scholarship includes work in primary care identification and management of mental health conditions, intimate partner violence, clinical communication skills while using the electronic health record, and cultural humility training. Dr. Fogarty’s creative academic writing includes narrative, poetry, and 55-word stories, which have been published in several journals. She has received creative writing awards from the University of Rochester Cluster on Human Values in Healthcare and the Family Medicine Education Consortium. She practices and teaches writing 55-word stories with colleagues and residents, and has edited the 55-word story column for the journal Families, Systems, and Health. She serves as Assistant Editor for the journal Family Medicine. Dr. Fogarty was named co-editor (with Larry Mauksch) of the journal, Families, Systems, and Health in 2013.
