Colleen T. Fogarty, M.D., M.Sc., FAAFP Accepted as a Fellow in Prestigious Leadership Program

Colleen T. Fogarty, M.D., M.Sc., FAAFP,William Rocktaschel Professor and Chair of the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Department of Family Medicine, has been accepted as a Fellow in the 2020-2021, Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women.

Established in 1995, the ELAM program, which is hosted by Drexel University College of Medicine, offers an intensive one-year fellowship of leadership training with extensive coaching, networking and mentoring opportunities aimed at expanding the national pool of qualified women candidates for leadership in academic medicine, dentistry, public health and pharmacy.

Acceptance into ELAM is determined through an annual competitive selection process, in which approximately 60 candidates are chosen each year. “I am truly honored to be part of this distinguished program,” said Dr. Fogarty, who has served as associate chair of Clinical Practice and Interprofessional Education, medical director at Highland Family Medicine, and during her tenure on University of Rochester faculty has also served as assistant residency director and as director of the Faculty Development Fellowship.

Each Fellow works on an Institutional Action Project addressing a need or priority of their institution. This project will be developed jointly with a senior staff person to ensure that it will be meaningful and productive for the institution and fellow.

Dr. Fogarty will participate in the ELAM Leaders Forum in the spring of 2021. The Forum is a unique opportunity for Fellows and their institutional leaders to discuss the wide range of organizational change initiatives addressed during the Fellowship year. The core of the Leaders Forum is a poster symposium showcasing the outcomes of the Fellows’ Institutional Action Projects—the capstone of the ELAM Fellowship year.

The effectiveness of ELAM's distinctive approach to leadership preparation is broadly recognized within the academic health community. ELAM graduates now number over 1,000 and serve in numerous leadership positions – department head through university president – at 287 U.S. and Canadian academic health centers.
