Rocco Vivenzio, M.D., C.M.D.

The American Medical Directors Association (AMDA) announced this morning that Rocco Vivenzio, M.D., C.M.D., is the 2013 recipient of the Medical Director of the Year Award. Dr. Vivenzio was one of the first nursing home medical directors in the region. He has been a leader in advancing long-term care and developing quality nursing homes and assisted-living facilities in the Rochester area for the past 30 years.
The AMDA Medical Director of the Year Award recognizes a medical director whose vision, passion, leadership, knowledge, and commitment succeed in taking patient care in the facilities they serve to exceptional levels of quality, excellence and innovation.

With the goal of standardizing and improving long-term care in the Rochester community, Dr. Vivenzio developed a network of providers and long-term care facilities known as the Strong Health Geriatrics Group, an affiliate of the University of Rochester Medical Center. In 1999, the Group encompassed seven nursing homes. Today, the Group includes 13 skilled-nursing facilities and 21 assisted-living facilities with thousands of patients and 30 medical providers. Dr. Vivenzio has served as Medical Director of the Group and more than a dozen of the facilities in the network.
“Dr. Vivenzio revolutionized geriatric care in Rochester,” said Robert M. McCann, M.D., Highland Hospital Chief of Medicine. “In addition, he has been an exemplary role model for many current and future primary care physicians and geriatricians in our community.”

At Highland Hospital, Dr. Vivenzio implemented initiatives to improve communication among providers between the hospital and long-term care facilities. These efforts helped lower hospital readmission rates and increase the rate of patient and family satisfaction.
Dr. Vivenzio retired as Medical Director of the Strong Health Geriatrics Group at the end of 2011 but remained Medical Director through 2012 of Crest Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center; Aaron Manor Rehabilitation and Continuing Care Center; and Fairport Baptist Home.
