Highland ICU Achieves Award for Patient Outcomes

Monday, April 15, 2013

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) recently honored the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Highland Hospital with a gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence. The award recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s standards for a healthy work environment. Highland scored within the top third of all hospitals to achieve the gold-level distinction.

“This achievement shows we provide a high level of quality care,” said Diane Martin, RN, CCRN, Nurse Educator in the Highland ICU. “The Beacon is a Nursing award, but it reflects the collaborative efforts of all staff members and providers who care for patients in the ICU.”

Units that achieve this three-year, three-level award with gold, silver and bronze designations meet national criteria consistent with Magnet Recognition, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the National Quality Healthcare Award.

To earn the distinction, Highland submitted a 48-page document that summarized progress made in the ICU in the past three years since it last received the Beacon Award. The submission detailed the ICU’s patient outcomes and summarized its patient satisfaction measures. Highland’s ICU outperformed national benchmarks for several quality measures and outcomes such as Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) rates and pressure ulcer rates.

AACN President Kathryn E. Roberts, RN, MSN, CNS, CCRN, CCNS, applauds the commitment of the caregivers in Highland Hospital’s ICU for working together to meet and exceed the high standards set forth by the Beacon Award for Excellence.

“The Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes caregivers in stellar units whose consistent and systematic approach to evidence-based care optimizes patient outcomes,” Roberts said. “Units that receive this national recognition serve as a role model to others on their journey to excellent patient and family care.”
