The Diabetes HealthSource of Highland Hospital will be hosting "Living with Diabetes," a series of group diabetes-management classes, from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28 in the Kingsley Conference Room on level 4 of Highland Hospital, 1000 South Ave. The cost is covered by most insurers with one co-pay, and each participant can bring a support person. Parking is free. For more information or to register, call (585) 341-7066.

“Through lifestyle changes, people can control their pre-diabetes or diabetes effectively,” says Sally Nordquist, R.N., C.D.E., M.S.Ed., Diabetes HealthSource coordinator. “These classes give patients an opportunity to learn from others facing similar challenges and to get some tips from our experts on how to best manage the disease.”

Certified Diabetes Educators and guest speakers will provide information on healthy food choices, physical activity, medications and stress management, so participants can develop personalized plans to control their diabetes.

The Diabetes HealthSource recently earned reaccreditation from the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). To achieve four-year accreditation, organizations and programs must meet national standards and demonstrate excellence in providing diabetes-management education.

Nearly 26 million Americans – more than 8 percent of the U.S. population – are known to have diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 1.9 million people age 20 and older were newly diagnosed with diabetes in the United States in 2010.
