The Evarts Joint Center offers a free pre-operative class for patients who are scheduled to have joint replacement surgery. Attendance is very important because the class will help prepare you for surgery, and will help you plan for a smooth experience in the hospital and after your discharge. We encourage family members and caregivers to attend too.
Classes are available at Highland Hospital or online.
Attending the class at Highland Hospital is recommended, so you can easily ask questions.
Topics covered in the Pre-Operative Class include:
Your hospital stay
The recovery process
Choosing your home care service
Items called "durable medical equipment" that you may need after surgery such as a walker, cane, etc.
Personal Assessments & Hands-On Training
You may be interested in visiting our outpatient facility at Clinton Crossings where an occupational therapist will provide individualized education and hands-on training to prepare you for the challenges of performing daily self-care tasks, such as dressing and bathing, and using adaptive equipment relevant to your specific anticipated post-surgical needs.
Depending on your limitations, the occupational therapist may provide instruction on how to use certain devices that assist in performing daily activities, such as putting on socks, reaching for household items, and bathing.
