Minimally Invasive & Robotic Surgery at Highland

Highland is a regional leader in minimally invasive surgery in a number of specialties including bariatric, gynecology, prostate, colorectal and gynecologic oncology. Minimally invasive surgery uses tiny instruments with a few short incisions to operate inside the body. Endoscopic, laparoscopic as well as robotic surgery are all minimally invasive techniques that surgeons use for many conditions and injuries. Minimally invasive surgery has become common practice for surgeries like appendectomies and gall bladder removal, and with the advent of robotic surgery, is being used for more complex cases.

Highland leads the state in robotic treatment of gynecologic cancers and in the use of a robotic approach for hysterectomies and has the latest state-of-the-art robotic technology including two daVinci® Surgical Systems -- the most advanced options available in surgery. Highland is affiliated with the URMC Center for Robotic Surgery and Innovation which supports the University of Rochester Medical Center's commitment to providing research leadership and state-of-the-art training to surgical teams performing new minimally invasive techniques.

  • Robotic surgery reduces length of stay in the hospital. For example, a traditional hysterectomy requires a three- to four-day stay in the hospital. With robotic hysterectomy, the length of stay drops to one day.
