Replacing an air handling unit on the roof of the Emergency Department

Starting on May 30 through mid-July, Highland Hospital will be replacing an air handling unit on the roof of the Emergency Department on the hospital’s south side. The existing unit is more than 40 years old and needs to be replaced. This will involve the use of a crane, trucks and some metal-cutting noise as the old unit will need to be dismantled in pieces in order to be removed.

Because of a minor amount of asbestos in the caulk in the perimeter of the unit, asbestos abatement will take place during the removal process. Highland Hospital will be following Department of Labor asbestos abatement regulations. This means there must be 25 feet of space between the project and the public. Bellevue Drive is about 45 feet away from the project. Warning tape and barriers will be in place so the public is aware of the project happening in that location.

Typical hours of work will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with some work occurring on weekends and into the evening to keep the project on schedule. No work will start before 7 a.m. in keeping with the City of Rochester noise ordinance.

The exact schedule for these events is still a work in progress but exact dates, including any weekends when construction will be happening, will be sent out through this blog once the hospital has more information. No work will be done on the July 4th holiday.
