South Tower Construction To Begin

After a six-month pause due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Highland Hospital’s South Tower Project will start up again this month. The Project is a modernization effort that will enable the hospital to provide private rooms for nearly all of its patients. It will add four levels plus a mechanical penthouse to the hospital's southeast wing - three of the floors will house a total of 58 patient rooms and one floor will house other clinical programs. Representatives from Highland Hospital and LeChase Construction will be presenting at the NBN6 zoom meeting on Monday, October 5. Updates will also be available weekly on the Highland Hospital Facilities Blog and contact information is available under the “Contact Us” tab.

Next week, crews will continue to remove the existing curbing, sidewalk and pavement at the South Access Drive loop. These activities are expected to cause noise and involve mostly the sounds of demolition and excavation equipment and trucks which include jack hammering, truck idling, loading of debris into dump trucks and back-up alarms.

Crews are also scheduled to install the emergency access road to Mt. Vernon Ave. starting on Oct. 8.  The existing retaining wall in this location will be removed and a new curb cut will be created which will require temporary closure of a portion of the sidewalk on the west side (hospital side) of Mt. Vernon.  Again, noise from the demolition and excavation equipment can be expected.

On Monday, Oct. 12, demolition crews will be working on the roof of and around the South Addition to remove the metal panel skin of the 3rd floor Mechanical Room.  This work is anticipated to last approximately three weeks and should create normal levels of construction noise.
