Highland Recognized as Center of Excellence for Inspire Device

Highland Hospital is being recognized as the first Center of Excellence in the Northeast for Inspire, the only FDA approved obstructive sleep apnea treatment that works inside the body to treat the root cause of sleep apnea with just the click of a button.

The small implantable device moves the patient’s tongue out of their airway while they sleep to prevent issues caused by obstructive sleep apnea. It takes the place of the typically cumbersome CPAP machines that many people wear at night.

“Selective upper airway stimulation, is different from other procedures for obstructive sleep apnea because it can improve the tone of airway muscles during sleep,” said Sveta Karelsky, M.D., Chief of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at Highland Hospital and Associate Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, who performs the procedure.

“Because of this, patients who are good candidates for Inspire typically have very good outcomes when it comes to treatment for their obstructive sleep apnea.”

Highland is the only facility offering Inspire in the region. You can learn more about Inspire here.
