Highland Brachytherapy Suite

Highland Hospital opened a new brachytherapy suite in Radiation Oncology this summer that is enhancing care for prostate cancer patients who qualify for High Dose Rate brachytherapy treatments in a streamlined OR-type environment.

“The newly renovated brachytherapy suite will improve quality of patient care by offering a choice for sedation,” said Hong Zhang, M.D., Chief of Radiation Oncology. “An onsite Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) allows for less travel through the hospital as patients recover in the radiation oncology department prior to discharge to home. Progress such as this brings Highland Radiation Oncology closer to our goal of a brachytherapy center of excellence.”

The brachytherapy suite includes the installation of medical gases and all standard anesthesia equipment to accommodate the administration of general anesthesia in a safe environment.  The availability of general anesthesia will allow more patients to have HDR brachytherapy who are unable to have spinal anesthesia, the only method previously used. A PACU area adjacent to the brachytherapy suite includes two recovery beds and will be staffed by trained PACU and Radiation Oncology RNs.

“The creation of the brachytherapy suite was a collaborative project and a demonstration of true Highland Pride,” said Dr. Zhang.  “A team including David Gentile, M.D., of Urology; Gregory Previte, M.D., and Steven Finkelstein, M.D., of Anesthesiology; Alan Curle, M.D., of Perioperative Services; Kevin Bylund, M.D., of Radiation Oncology; Caitlin Smith, MS, BSN, RN, Operating Room Nurse Manager; Sara LaCava, MS, BSN, RN, PACU Nurse Manager; Radiation Oncology, Perioperative Services and PACU, and OR staff; and Highland Support Services have been working on this since 2014. I would like to personally thank everyone involved.”

Radiation Oncology also provides a robust brachytherapy program for gynecological (GYN) cancer patients.  The new brachytherapy suite will allow for enhancement of services to the GYN cancer population at Highland.
