Highland Stands For Meaningful Inclusion and Diversity

As a respected health care institution in our community it is vital that Highland speak out against systemic racism and build our own action plan for moving Highland forward on our journey toward meaningful inclusion and diversity. Providers and staff were invited to listening sessions this summer as an opportunity to share experiences and perspectives with senior leadership. We want to thank each and every person who attended these sessions, and who sent in emails and notes. We were privileged to hear powerful stories about your experiences both at work and in everyday life.

These are some action items developed from what we learned:

  • Diversity Council: Highland will be forming an employee/provider committee that will serve to provide guidance and accountability for our action plan. We will also involve our Board of Directors in this work.
  • Training & Education: Highland will be developing educational opportunities and training to promote deeper understanding of the role and impact of bias.
  • Hiring Diverse Staff: Highland will seek to increase diversity among candidates for open positions by engaging in recruiting efforts designed to attract diverse candidate pools.
  • Job Training: Highland will develop job training programs to afford the opportunity for internal growth and develop our people. Soon we will also be announcing two new educational funds to support these efforts.

This is just a beginning. As we begin to implement these internal action items and continue to identify opportunities, we also recognize that we are committed to looking outward, as we have signed the Greater Rochester Black Agenda Group's declaration that racism is a public health crisis. This declaration includes specific action items that we have incorporated into our management plan. We will continue to dig deeper into how and what we must do to support change in our community.

We will keep you informed and we continue to welcome discussion and ideas from each of you. We appreciate your involvement and support.
