Resident Looking at Monitors with Dr. EllikaRotations

The fellows spend the majority of their workdays at Strong Memorial Hospital, with one day spent at our out-patient facility at East River Road. When cases are completed on sub-specialty days (ENT and ped neuro), the fellows can continue reading other in-patient and out-patient neuro exams. Being able to read pediatric and head and neck studies throughout the year provides a more longitudinal exposure to these patients and a greater exposure to less common and interesting cases.

Conferences

The fellows receive one dedicated weekly didactic lecture and one journal club per month that cover various neuroradiology topics. The fellows are required to participate in a weekly Neuroscience Conference that reviews and discusses the clinical and imaging findings of interesting cases with Neurology and Neurosurgery. Other interdisciplinary conferences in which the fellows are encouraged to attend include brain tumor board, head and neck tumor board, radiology ENT case conference, neuro-pediatric case conference, pediatric brain tumor board, pediatric tumor board, neurovascular, neuro-immunology and epilepsy conferences.

Research

Group of Fellows in HospitalIn the context of a one-year fellowship, the fellows are encouraged but not required to participate in a research project, with mentorship provided by one of the neuroradiology faculty. The Del Monte Neuroscience Institute is one of the preeminent institutions dedicated to the study of the brain, with the Department of Neurology alone receiving $21.1 million in NIH research support in 2017. The Institute has a dedicated 3T magnet for research purposes and has been used for projects such as traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer Disease, and translation brain mapping. The Medical Center also clinically operates a dual energy CT and PET MR scanner.

The fellows are required to submit one abstract to a national conference. The Department will provide financial support and time for the fellows to attend at least one conference. Additional national conferences may also be supported if the fellows submit work to more than one conference.

After the first three months, the fellows receive one academic day per week to work on an abstract, research project, quality improvement initiative, educational exhibit, lecture or other sub-specialty interest.
