Program Overview

This symposium is designed to update primary care providers, internists, cardiologists, hospitalists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses as well as all other allied health care professionals who are frequently called upon to manage and refer cardiologic problems. The goal of this activity is to improve their ability to handle the issues discussed through a combination of didactic lectures along with case studies in cardiovascular medicine.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize that common autoimmune diseases impart an increased independent risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease.
  • Define resistant hypertension and identify the best drug options.
  • Explain the inter-relationship between sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease.
  • Identify anticoagulation options in atrial fibrillation management.
  • Order appropriate genetic tests for diagnosis of heart disease and use test results in patient management.
  • Apply new treatment recommendations for patients with syncope.
  • Acquire an increased ability to assess and treat patients with enhanced cardiac symptoms due to illegal drug use.
  • Identify the appropriate cardiac testing for preoperative clearance.
