Computational Radiology Lab welcomes Rohith and Udaysankar
Rohith and Udaysankar (Uday), both MD/PhD students, will be working on individual projects for their lab rotations.
Rohith will be working on generating realistic simulated fMRI data to evaluate methods developed at the Wismüller lab for studying connectivity in the resting-state fMRI data. Uday will be investigating how these methods compare to conventionally used approaches for establishing connectivity, by analyzing them from a graph-theoretical perspective.

Congratulations to Anas, Adora and team on winning Challenge #1 at the RocHackHealth2016
The Wismüller Computational Radiology Lab congratulates Alykhan Alani, Adora DSouza, Arnab Sarkar, and Anas Abidin on securing the first place at the ‘RocHackHealth2016, Challenge #1: Predicting Hospital Readmissions'. They successfully developed a novel approach to predict patients who would be readmitted to hospital care by adopting techniques from feature selection and machine learning. Adora's and Anas's success demonstrates our commitment to contribute to data mining and knowledge discovery in big data retrieved from electronic medical health records.

Computational Radiology Lab welcomes Botao Deng
Botao Deng, a graduate student at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will be working at the Wismüller Lab on applying deep learning techniques to analyze clinical imaging data from patients with interstitial lung disease.

Computational Radiology Lab attends SPIE Medical Imaging 2016 Conference, San Diego, California`
Adora D'Souza and Anas Abidin received travel grants from the Wismüller Lab for attending the SPIE Medical Imaging 2016 conference in San Diego, California, where five scientific papers had been accepted for publication. We contributed four oral presentations entitled (i) Mutual connectivity analysis (MCA) using generalized radial basis function neural networks for nonlinear functional connectivity network recovery in resting-state functional MRI, (ii) Large-scale Granger causality analysis on resting-state functional MRI, (iii) Investigating Changes in Brain Network Properties in HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disease (HAND) using Mutual Connectivity Analysis (MCA), and (iv) Detecting altered connectivity patterns in HIV associated neurocognitive impairment using Mutual Connectivity Analysis.
In addition, we presented a poster entitled Assessing vertebral fracture risk on volumetric quantitative computed tomography by geometric characterization of trabecular bone structure.

Wismüller Lab Attending RSNA 2015 (Nov. 29 - Dec. 4)
Dr. Wismüller's research group will present two talks at The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA®) this year titled Mutual connectivity analysis with graph theoretic measures for identifying regions with altered functional connectivity in HIV infection and Functional Network Identification in Resting-State Functional MRI Data Using Reduced Dimension Granger Causality. RSNA is an international society of radiologists, medical physicists and other medical professionals from across the globe. It hosts the world's premier radiology forum, drawing approximately 55,000 attendees annually to McCormick Place in Chicago.

Anas Zainul Abidin Receives Best Teaching Assistant Award
Congratulations to Anas Zainul Abidin on winning the best Teaching Assistant Award for the academic year 2014-15. He was awarded for his outstanding efforts by the BME department for the course titled ‘Analytical Foundations in BME’ during Fall 2014.

Raul Rodriguez successfully completes lab rotation project in the Wismüller Lab
Biomedical Engineering PhD student Raul Rodriguez successfully completed his lab rotation on 3D visualization of large-scale effective connectivity networks in the human brain using resting-state functional MRI data.
Raul’s project focused on using novel methods developed in our lab to obtain effective connectivity measures between functional MRI time-series of every pair of voxels in the brain (~10^4 in the full brain) and visualize the functionally connected networks. Connectivity was quantified by computing a causal influence score using Mutual Connectivity Analysis (MCA) followed by segmenting the brain into functionally connected networks using non-metric community detection approaches. To perform such high-resolution effective brain connectivity analysis, Raul accomplished this task by parallelization and distributed computing using both graphics processing units (GPUs) and state-of-the-art parallel computing resources from the Center for Integrated Research Computing at the University of Rochester.

This publication was co-authored by Xixi Wang, Mahesh B. Nagarajan, Adora M. DSouza, Susan K. Hobbs, and Axel Wismüller.

Five scientific publications accepted at SPIE Medical Imaging 2015 Conference: Computational Radiology Lab goes to Orlando, Florida
Anas Zainul Abidin and Adora DSouza have received travel grants from the Wismüller Lab to attend and present at the SPIE Medical Imaging 2015 Conference in Orlando, Florida, from Feb 21st – Feb 26th. They will give three oral presentations and present two scientific posters.
The three oral presentations are entitled
Nonlinear functional connectivity network recovery in the human brain with mutual connectivity analysis (MCA): convergent cross-mapping and non-metric clustering,
Characterizing trabecular bone structure for assessing vertebral fracture risk on volumetric quantitative computed tomographyand
Volumetric characterization of human patellar cartilage matrix on phase contrast x-ray computed tomography.
In addition, they will present two scientific posters entitled
Functional connectivity analysis in resting state fMRI with echo-state networks and non-metric clustering for network structure recovery, and
Combining mutual information and non-metric clustering for functional connectivity analysis in resting-state functional MRI.

Anas Abidin delivers scientific presentations at RSNA 2014 in Chicago
Anas Zainul Abidin, a PhD student in our group, received a travel grant from the Wismüller Lab to attend and present at the centennial Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America 2014, which was held in Chicago from November 30th to December 5th.
Anas presented two scientific papers entitled
Improving Bone Strength Prediction in Proximal Femur Specimens through Quantitative Characterization of Trabecular Micro-architecture with Minkowski Functionals and Support Vector Regression(authored by Chien-Chun Yang et al.) and
Improving Femoral Bone Strength Prediction through Characterization of Trabecular Micro-architecture with Anisotropic Minkowski Functionals and Quantitative Anisotropy Measures(authored by Mahesh Nagarajan et al.). Congratulations to Anas on his well-received scientific presentations!

Congratulations to Adora DSouza on receiving the CFAR World AIDS Day Symposium Graduate Student Poster Award!
Adora DSouza, a master's student in the Wismüller Lab, presented a scientific poster by our group entitled,
Nonlinear Functional Connectivity Analysis in the Human Brain on Resting State fMRI: Mutual Connectivity Analysis with Non-Metric Clustering.
The methodology explained on this poster will be used to compare functional connectivity of brain networks in non-HIV and HIV patients. Adora was selected as one of the recipients of the University of Rochester Center for Aids Research (CFAR) World AIDS Day Poster Award for her presentation.

Functional Connectivity Analysis in Resting State fMRI Workshop Starts Tomorrow
A workshop on functionally connectivity analysis in resting state fMRI will be held from Aug. 20 to Aug. 22 at the Rochester Center for Brain Imaging (RCBI). The workshop will be organized by Dr. Axel Wismüller of the University of Rochester and Dr. Lutz Leistritz of Friedrich Schiller University (Jena, Germany). The goal of this workshop will be to discuss ideas related to analytic methods for recovering functionally connected networks in the human brain through resting state fMRI. Topics will include (but not limited to) mutual connectivity analysis, granger causality, non-metric clustering, independent component analysis etc.

Mahesh Nagarajan Receives Commendation in the Outstanding Dissertation Award Competition for Engineering
Mahesh Nagarajan's doctoral thesis titled " A Framework for Computer-Aided Diagnosis with Novel Computational Methods for Characterizing Healthy and Pathological Soft Tissue Patterns on Medical Images" was selected to receive commendation in the Outstanding Dissertation Award competition for engineering.
Additionally, Mahesh was also awarded the Outstanding Thesis Award from the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Congratulations!

Professor Axel Wismüller receives NIH R01 Award
Axel Wismueller, M.D., Ph.D.
Axel Wismüller, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Imaging Sciences and Biomedical Engineering has received an RO1 award from the National Institutes of Health for his project,
Exploring large scale functional connectivity in the human brain: from bench to bedside.Supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and its AIDS research program, this three-year project will focus on developing a novel computational framework to explore directed information transfer in the human brain, which will permit connectivity analysis in large time-series ensembles obtained from functional MRI neuro-imaging studies.
To demonstrate the clinical applicability of this innovative framework, an associated clinical study will also investigate changes in brain networks observed in patients with HIV-related cognitive impairment under anti-retroviral therapy. The overall goal is to establish a clinical model for evaluating whole-brain functional connectivity as a novel biomarker for disease progression and therapy effectiveness. Embedded in the Collaborative Research in Computational Neuroscience program of the National Science Foundation, the project launches a transatlantic network that promotes teaching, training and career mentoring activities for young researchers at undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels.

BME and Radiology Professor Axel Wismüller "Goes Green"
Biomedical Engineering and Radiology Professor Axel W. E. Wismüller, M.D., Ph.D. explains to his students why a mathematical understanding of ecosystems can help to improve environmental awareness. Instead of thoughtlessly spraying pesticides, it may be better to rely on natural enemies for plant protection.
Such future-oriented multidisciplinary teaching activity supports the University of Rochester in its leadership endeavor to promote sustainability in research, curricular, clinical, and outreach efforts, and to play a proactive and collaborative role in contributing to an environmentally healthy community.
This vision for sustainability is promoted by the University's 'Go Green!' initiative, which began in 2008 with the creation of a University Council on Sustainability. In 2007, a Council Task Force developed 25 recommendations and timeframes for the implementation of university-wide programs for improvements in areas such as waste management, purchasing, and land use. Student initiatives have included the award-winning UR BioDiesel project and the EcoReps program. Read more about Sustainability @ the University of Rochester and its quest to 'Go Green'.
The Biomedical Engineering Department is uniquely poised to contribute to the University's overall initiatives. With its combined emphasis on theoretical understanding of science and its engineering focus of solving real-world problems, the BME Department plays an important part in the Sustainability endeavor.
