AIR Research Presented at National Meeting 2017

The AIR Division was well represented at the American College of Rheumatology's National Meeting in San Diego, CA November 4-8, 2017. This meeting highlights the most current research findings as they relate to Rheumatology. Ten faculty members and one fellow had a total of 23 presentations which included poster and oral abstract presentations, panel discussions, meet the professor sessions, study sessions and topic presentations.

At the 2017 National Meeting of the American College of Rheumatology, John Looney, M.D. was honored with one of the College's highest honors. He was the recipient of its Master of the ACR designation. Recipients must "have made outstanding contributions to the field of rheumatology through scholarly achievement and/or service to their patients, students, and the rheumatology profession (and) devoted their long careers to furthering rheumatology research and improving clinical standards in the treatment of rheumatic diseases."

Allen Anandarajah, M.D., MSc Awarded Grant to Improve Health Care for Lupus Patients

Dr. Allen Anandarajah was awarded a grant from the GRHF for his project to improve care for patients with SLE in the Rochester area who are at high risk for hospital admission. The goals of the project are to improve access to care and adherence to medication use, identify and modify behavioral and social impediments to on-going care and to provide an increased awareness of lupus in patients and the community.

Javier Rangel-Moreno, PhD attended the 2017 EULAR Congress in Madrid, Spain in June of 2017, where he was invited to make a podium presentation of his research, "Selective inhibitors of nuclear export prevent lupus progression by targeting germinal center formation and autoreactive antibody secreting cells."

Bethany Marston, M.D. Awarded Rheumatology Research Foundation Clinician Scholar Educator Award

Dr. Bethany Marston was awarded funding for her proposal "Rheum4Science: An Interactive Online Tutorial for Rheumatology Fellows." She will be converting materials on basic science and clinical research methodology written by experts in the field to consistent, user-friendly, and relevant eLearning modules using best practices for web-based curricula and evaluating the implementation of the Rheum4Science curriculum in practice using self-determination theory. In addition, Dr. Marston will Initiate and evaluate the effects of a Rheum4Science social media discussion group.

John Looney, M.D. Awarded Grant to Study Bone Marrow IFNβ and Mesenchymal Stromal Cells

Dr. John Looney was awarded a grant from the Alliance for Lupus Research and Pfizer's Center for Therapeutic Innovation Challenge Grant Program to examine the expression and function of IFNβ in SLE patients. Dr. Looney will characterize the regulation and unique functional properties of IFNβ in inducing MSC senescence and loss of immunosuppression function. In addition, the research will define the role of intracellular DNA/RNA sensing pathways in the induction of IFNβ in bone marrow and elucidate the effects of overexpression or silencing of key molecules in the signaling pathway including MAVS, STING, and cGAS on MSC IFNβ production.

Maria Slack, M.D. Awarded American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Young Investigator Award

Dr. Maria Slack was awarded funding for her proposal, "Gastrointestinal Dysregulation and Systemic Inflammation in Common Variable Immune Deficiency." Dr. Slack will be investigating the IgA- and IgM-coated and uncoated microbiome and determining mucosal dysregulation and systemic immune activation in CVID.
