Bench to Bedside Research Using Systems Biology Research
Our overarching interest is to understand better the molecular mechanisms that promote inflammatory and metabolic bone diseases and how environmental and pathophysiological factors such as smoking and obesity worsens joint damage and lower treatment responses.
Our current research efforts are focused on critical questions related to the pathogenesis and progression of bone diseases such as psoriatic arthritis (PsA), osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Our primary short-term research goals are; (a) understanding the molecular mechanisms of osteoblast and osteoclast differentiation (b) delineating the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in PsA, AS and RA treatment response and (c) examination of how obesity and cigarette smoking lowers therapeutic response in bone diseases such as osteoporosis, PsA, AS and RA. Currently, we are using high-throughput approaches (RNAseq, proteomics, and metabolomics) with advanced computational network analysis and complimentary standard cell and molecular assays to identify differential gene-protein-metabolomic signatures that regulate bone homeostasis in metabolic and inflammatory bone diseases.
