Platelet Biology: Diabetes/ Cardiovascular Disease/ Transfusion Medicine

platelet biologyThe platelet is the most numerous white blood cell and is responsible for forming clots. Interestingly, platelets are much more than clot forming cells. They contain many proinflammatory mediators such as IL-1 and CD40 ligand which incite inflammation and can powerfully regulate immune cells. Platelets are key for inducing morbidity and mortality in diabetics and are crucial cellular elements in stroke and cardiovascular disease. We have identified a transcription factor in human platelets that controls their ability to become activated. This new target is leading to new therapeutics to control unwanted platelet activation that will lead to reduced stroke and other serious conditions. Techniques and areas of investigation: Human platelet biology, flow cytometry, transfusion medicine, cell-cell interaction, models of thrombosis, transcription factors, cell biology, ELISA, western blot. Research funded by an NIH grant.
