Christopher Hoolihan, M.L.S.

Introduction

Christopher HoolihanChristopher Hoolihan was Rare Books and Manuscripts Librarian at the Edward G. Miner Library of the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry from 1985 until his retirement. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Hoolihan received his undergraduate degree (1971) from Canisius College, Buffalo, N.Y., and his masters degree in library science (1978) from the School of Information & Library Science, State University of New York at Buffalo.

Upon completing his studies, Hoolihan was appointed Rare Books Librarian at Washington University School of Medicine Library in St. Louis. He returned to Western New York in August 1985 following his appointment as History of Medicine Librarian at the Edward G. Miner Library. From November 1993 through April 2003, Hoolihan was head of technical services at the Miner Library as well as head of special collections. In April 2003 he returned full-time to special collections as Rare Books & Manuscripts Librarian.

During his tenure at the Miner Library Hoolihan managed the growth of the rare book collections from 7,500 volumes to 25,000 volumes, established a rare medical periodicals collection of 800 titles (29,000 volumes), and formed an archival collection comprised largely of faculty manuscript collections (2,000 linear feet). He is the author of two dozen articles and reviews, and has compiled annotated bibliographies of several of the collections he curated – the most notable being An annotated catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater, M.D. Collection of American Popular Medicine & Health Reform published by the University of Rochester Press in three volumes between 2001 and 2008.

The Hoolihan papers reflect not only the forty-year career of a special collections librarian, but the many changes that occurred in academic medical libraries and special collections during this period. Processing of the collection was completed in October 2017. The Papers of Christopher Hoolihan are contained in twenty-four document boxes occupying fourteen linear feet.

The collection is divided into two unequal series – the first being material generated during his eight years at Washington University School of Medicine (2 boxes), and the second from his tenure at the Miner Library (22 boxes). The files within each series are arranged alphabetically, including genre material such as correspondence, publications, statistics and talks.
