Gilbert B. Forbes, M.D.

Introduction

Gilbert B. Forbes, M.D.Gilbert Burnett Forbes (1915-2003) was a member of the Dept. of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center from 1953 until his death forty-nine years later. Known internationally for his work on pediatric body composition and pediatric nutrition, Forbes was also a distinguished clinician, educator, and journal editor. He was the author of 150 articles, forty-four book chapters, and a classic text entitled Human body composition: growth, aging, nutrition and activity, published at New York by Springer-Verlag in 1987.

The Papers of Gilbert B. Forbes reflect the various aspects of Forbes’ long and productive career. The collection includes extensive correspondence, research data, publications, oral presentations and personal diaries. It also includes material pertaining to his father, Gilbert D. Forbes, M.D. (Boxes 66-72). The greater part of the Forbes collection dates post-1970, indicating that at some point Forbes discarded parts of his earlier files.

Although Dr. Forbes had begun the transfer of his papers, the bulk of these materials were presented to the Edward G. Miner Library in the summer of 2003 by his daughters, Constance Citro and Susan Martin, and by Elizabeth McAnarney, M.D., Chairman of the Dept. of Pediatrics. The processing of the Papers of Gilbert B. Forbes was completed in August 2005. The collection is contained in seventy-two boxes and occupies thirty-one linear feet.

Biography

Gilbert Burnett Forbes was born in Rochester, N.Y. on 9 November 1915. He was the seventh generation of Forbes in America dating back to William Forbes, who emigrated from Scotland to New York City in 1713 (see the genealogy in Personal Diary, Box 56, Folder 4). His father, Gilbert de Leverance Forbes (1881-1943), was a 1909 medical graduate of the University of Buffalo and a physician practicing in Kendall, N.Y., where G.B.F. grew up. G.B.F. attended Genesee Wesleyan Seminary in Lima, N.Y., from which he graduated in 1932. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester in 1936.

Forbes graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry in 1940. Subsequently he was:

  • Intern in pediatrics, Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY, 1940-41
  • Resident in pediatrics, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, St. Louis, MO., 1941-43
  • Instructor in Pediatrics, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, 1943-46
  • Pediatrician at the Los Alamos Hospital, Los Alamos, NM, 1946-47
  • Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, 1947-50
  • Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, 1950
  • Chairman of the Dept. of Pediatrics, Southwestern Medical School, Dallas; Medical Director, Texas Children’s Hospital, Dallas; Chief of Pediatric Staff, Parkland Hospital, Dallas, 1950-53.
  • Associate Professor of Pediatrics, University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, 1953-57
  • Professor of Pediatrics, University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, 1957-68
  • Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Radiation Biology & Biophysics, 1968-81
  • Professor of Pediatrics and Biophysics, University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, 1981-92
  • Professor of Pediatrics Emeritus, University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, 1992.

Gilbert Forbes, M.D.Forbes’ research focused on body composition and devising techniques for measuring body composition. Of particular importance was his development circa 1960 of K-40 counting techniques to determine lean body mass, and by subtraction, body fat. Forbes' pioneer work in the study of human body composition deepened our understanding of nutrition, and established the significance of body fat content as a prime factor in determining the response of the body to both nutritional deficit and nutritional surfeit. Forbes' research contributed greatly to understanding the components of adolescent growth and the nutritional requirements necessary during adolescence. As one Forbes' colleagues has stated, "It is in large part through his efforts that human body composition is now established as an important feature of the science of human biology.”

Forbes was not only a medical scientist, but was active in editing scholarly journals. He served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Diseases of Children (AJDC) from 1964 to 1973; was associate editor of the AJDC from 1964 to 1972; and chief editor from 1973 to 1982. He was also associate editor of Nutrition Reviews from 1961 to 1971; and was on the editorial board of Pediatrics from 1984.

Forbes was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Nutrition (1956-62; 1973-79); several subcommittees of the National Research Council (1959-66); the Nutrition Study Section of the National Institutes of Health (1963-67); the Nutrition Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Committee (1964-66); the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (1966-79); and NIH's Human Embryology and Development Study Section (1967-70).

He was recipient of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development's Research Career Award beginning in 1962; the Borden Award of the American Academy of Pediatrics (1964); and the Howland Award of the American Pediatric Society (1992). Forbes was also president of the Society for Pediatric Research (1960-61) and vice-president of the American Pediatric Society (1975-76). In 1970-71 he was Visiting Research Fellow at Oxford University; and between 1974 and 1976 was co-chairman of the Dept. of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry.

Gilbert B. Forbes married Grace Ann Moehlman (d. 1994) on 8 July 1939. The Forbes had two daughters: Constance and Susan. Gilbert Burnett Forbes died at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. on 26 June 2003.

How the Forbes Papers are Organized

GENERAL (Boxes 1-8)

This series contains materials pertaining to Forbes' involvement with various organizations, i.e., scholarly societies, medical societies, academic institutions, hospitals, etc. It also includes materials generated while he was editor or on the editorial board of various scholarly journals. The files in the General series are arranged alphabetically by organization name.

PUBLICATIONS (Boxes 9-24)

The publications series includes four kinds of material: manuscripts of journal articles, miscellaneous correspondence with publishers, bound reprints, and books.

Besides the original manuscript (or a photocopy), folders containing manuscripts (Boxes 9-17) may include different versions of the same article, correspondence with the editor of the journal(s) to which it was submitted, correspondence with colleagues regarding the article's content, research material, and illustrations. This subseries includes articles both published and unpublished, and is arranged chronologically.

Box 18 of the publications series includes requests for reprints of articles written by Forbes, and miscellaneous correspondence with publishers.

A complete set of bound reprints (1943-1992) of articles, letters to the editor, book chapters, etc. written by Forbes is contained in Boxes 19-21. Reprints for articles published after 1992 are not present. For these the researcher should consult the manuscripts in Box 17.

Boxes 22-24 contain copies of books that Forbes edited and/or to which he contributed a chapter. Included here is his 1987 book: Human body composition, published by Springer-Verlag (Box 23).

ORAL PRESENTATIONS (Boxes 25-30)

This series includes oral presentations made at national & international conferences, local or regional medical society meetings, named lectureships, seminars, post-graduate courses, etc. The folders in this series may include the text or an abstract of the presentation, correspondence with the organizer of the event at which the presentation was delivered, meeting programs, etc.

The oral presentations subseries is arranged chronologically. Folders are headed with the name of the host institution or organizing body, not the title of the presentation, which often is not provided.

RESEARCH (Boxes 31-40)

The research series includes laboratory notebooks; graphs, tables, etc.; correspondence with funding agencies; and copies of grant applications. Many folders include correspondence with colleagues. The researcher should bear in mind that other research correspondence may be found in the correspondence series, and to a lesser extent in the publications series.

Forbes' research material had no order of arrangement in the office files from which they were removed. They have been rearranged chronologically - retaining original folder headings - to reflect the focus and direction of Forbes' research over the course of six decades.

CORRESPONDENCE (Boxes 41-50)

This series includes correspondence written to and from Forbes. The bulk of the correspondence is professional, though some personal correspondence is mixed in. Forbes discarded his earliest correspondence files sometime in the 1980s. Though some earlier correspondence has survived, the bulk of this series dates post 1970.

The correspondence series is arranged alphabetically, as it was in Forbes' files. Here, however, separate files have been created for individual correspondents if there was a sufficient volume of letters and accompanying material to warrant separation from the rest of the file.

The final two boxes in this series (Boxes 49-50) are closed to the public. They contain copies of letters of recommendation (1953-83) and memos Forbes wrote regarding the outcome of his interviews with prospective house officers between 1953 and 1976.

PATIENT MATERIAL (Boxes 51-52)

Both boxes of patient-related documents in the collection are closed to the public. They include hospital cases histories and discharge summaries (St. Louis, 1940-49); hospital case histories (Dallas, 1950-53); and documentation of pediatric grand rounds at the URMC between 1953 and 1967.

PERSONAL (Boxes 53-72)

This series encompasses a wide variety of materials, including curricula vitae. newspaper & magazine clippings, etc. (Box 53); Forbes' medical school syllabi and class notes (Boxes 54-55); personal diaries that Forbes maintained between 1945 and 1979 (Boxes 56-59); personal account ledgers for the years 1936-1981 (Boxes 59-60); daily appointment books (Boxes 61-62); materials pertaining to his 1970-71 sabbatical in England (Boxes 63-64); diplomas, licenses, certificates & awards (Boxes 65-66); and six boxes of material generated by his father, Gilbert de Leverance Forbes, M.D., a 1909 medical graduate of the Universty of Buffalo and a practitioner and school health official in Kendall, N.Y. (Boxes 67-72).
