Julia F. Sollenberger, M.L.S.

Biography

Julia Sollenberger, M.L.S.A native of New Holland, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Julia Faye Gingrich received her undergraduate degree (cum laude) in mathematics from Manchester College, North Manchester, Indiana, in 1972. After teaching mathematics in Marion, Indiana (1972-73) and in Bloomington (1973-76), Sollenberger enrolled in the library science program at Indiana University, Bloomington. She received her master of library science degree in 1977. In 1977-78 she completed a post-graduate fellowship in biomedical information systems management at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), Bethesda, Md. Between 1978 and 1980, Sollenberger was Systems Librarian in the Technical Services Division of NLM with responsibility for designing, implementing and evaluating computer systems, as well as project officer for the retrospective conversion of NLM’s cataloging records into machine readable (MARC) format.

In 1980 Sollenberger left the National Library of Medicine to become Head of Information Services at the Edward G. Miner Library, University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry in Rochester, New York. In 1984 she was promoted to Head of Public Services and in 1992 to Assistant Director for Public and Computing Services. She was appointed Assistant Director of the Edward G. Miner Library in 1994, and Deputy Director with responsibility for administering all aspects of library operations in 1997. In 1998, Sollenberger was made Director of Health Science Libraries & Technologies. From 2009 until her retirement in 2017, her increasing field of responsibility was recognized in her appointment as Associate Vice President and Director of Medical Center Libraries & Technologies. Sollenberger also held departmental appointments as Assistant Professor of Medical Informatics (1998-2006) and Associate Professor of Public Health Sciences (2006-2017).

During the course of her administrative career in Rochester, Sollenberger directed the Medical Center libraries through the revolutionary transition from libraries as a repositories of print materials to libraries as centers of digital resources requiring entirely new models of collection management, public access and information services. Sollenberger was influential nationally in the implementation of information and bibliographic databases in academic medical libraries and in the training of health science librarians in the understanding and use of these resources. Her commitment to making medical information accessible extended beyond the Medical Center to include other health science libraries in the MiracleNet network (Box 9, Folder 10), and to the Rochester community in general through such programs as CLIC-on-Health, a resource for making consumer health information available to underserved populations (Box 13, Folders 2-12).

As an educator, Sollenberger taught medical librarianship to library school students, directed the training of medical students in the use of information databases, and lectured on copyright and fair use to graduate students. She mentored several of her colleagues as a Leadership Fellow in the Association of Health Science Libraries/NLM Leadership Fellows Program.

Sollenberger was an active member of the Medical Library Association (MLA). She was the recipient of MLA’s Estelle Brodman Award in 1993, was designated a Fellow in 2005, and received the Ida and George Eliot Prize for her article “The value of library and information services in patient care” in 2014. In 2016 Sollenberger received the Janet Doe Lectureship Award, and in May 2017 presented her lecture “Looking inside ourselves: a culture of kindness” to the Medical Library Association membership at the annual meeting in Seattle. Sollenberger served as president of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) in 2008-09; edited the 24th-26th editions of AAHSL's Annual statistics of medical school libraries in the United States and Canada (2002-2005); was a member of the editorial board of the Journal of electronic resources in medical libraries (2004-2016); and assumed leadership roles in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine-Middle Atlantic Region; the Upstate New York & Ontario Chapter of the Medical Library Association; and the Rochester Regional Library Council. Sollenberger was the author of two dozen journal articles, book chapters, manuals, etc., and delivered some forty presentations to national and regional organizations.

In 1972, Julia F. Gingrich married Dale Sollenberger, a native of Smithville, Ohio, most of whose career was focused on financial systems. They have two sons: Ian (b. 1983) and Dane (b. 1989).
