Otto F. Thaler, M.D.

Introduction

Otto F. Thaler, M.D. was a member of the Dept. of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry from 1955 until his death in 1996. Thaler may best perhaps be remembered as an educator and as a clinician. He directed programs within the Dept. of Psychiatry for the education of first- and second-year  medical students, as well as the training and supervision of psychiatry residents. At different stages of his career, Thaler also directed in-patient and out-patient services within the Department. Thaler’s papers were transferred to the Edward G. Miner Library soon after his death. Processing the Thaler collection was completed in November 2016. The Papers of Otto F. Thaler, M.D. are contained in twenty-three boxes and occupy ten linear feet.

Biography

Otto F. Thaler, M.D.Otto Felix Thaler was born in Vienna, Austria, on June 17, 1923 to Heinrich Thaler (d. 1951), a physician, and his wife Katherine (d. 1977). Thaler attended public schools and the Gymnasium in Vienna until his fifteenth year. In March 1938, Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany. In July of that year the Thaler family emigrated from Vienna to New York City. The family found itself in straitened circumstances, as Heinrich Thaler, a University of Vienna medical graduate, was not able to practice medicine in the United States until 1940. Otto Thaler attended the High School of Commerce (1938-40) in New York. After graduation he was employed at an export business, while attending night school at the College of the City of New York (1940-43).

In March 1943 Thaler was drafted into the U.S. Army. After training in the artillery, Thaler entered the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP), the purpose of which was to select and train junior officers. As part of the program he became a pre-engineering student at the University of New Hampshire, but after six months transferred to the pre-medicine program at Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y. Thaler graduated from Hamilton in 1944. In September 1945 he entered the first year class of the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, Rochester, N.Y., from which he graduated in 1949.

In 1949-1950 Thaler did a rotating internship at Strong Memorial Hospital, the teaching hospital of the University of Rochester. It was during this stage of his training that Thaler decided on a career in psychiatry. At the end of eighteen months Thaler was again called into military service. He served from January 1950 until October 1952 as Chief of Service of the Psychiatric Section of the Osaka Army Hospital, Osaka, Japan.

In November 1952 Thaler returned to the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry as a second-year resident in psychiatry. He completed his residency in June 1955 and was almost immediately appointed Instructor in Psychiatry. During this period Thaler began training in psychoanalysis under Sandor Feldman, M.D. (1890-1973), a disciple of Freud and an internationally renowned psychoanalysist who in 1941 had joined the psychiatry unit at Rochester (then part of the Dept. of Medicine). In September 1959 Thaler began training at the Downstate Psychoanalytic Institute. He made frequent visits to New York City over a period of four years in order to complete the program in June 1963.

In 1958 Thaler was promoted to Senior Instructor in Psychiatry, and in 1960 to Assistant Professor. In 1964 he was appointed Associate Professor, and in 1971 Professor of Psychiatry. In 1962 Thaler assumed responsibility for the psychiatry curriculum taught first-year students in the School of Medicine. That same year he became Director of the Biopsychosocial Medicine Program for first- and second-year students. Thaler retained responsibility for the first-year program until mid-1983, and for the biopsychosocial program through the early 1990s. Thaler was also involved in the training and supervision of psychiatry residents, teaching seminars on psychodynamics, psychotherapy, and an elective seminar on Freud.

In 1962 Thaler became Associate Clinical Director of Y-2, a psychiatric ward. The following year he was appointed Chief Psychiatrist of the In-Patient Division within the Dept. of Psychiatry. He was made Director of Out-Patient Services in 1972, and Director of the Fellowship Program for Advanced Psychodynamic Education in 1973. Thaler served as chairman of the steering committee of the University of Rochester Faculty Senate (1967); was recipient of the University of Rochester Alumni Gold Medal in 1980; was elected president of the Western New York Psychoanalytic Society (1983-85); and was the first Robert Wood Johnson Senior Dean’s Teaching Scholar in 1992.

On New Year’s Eve 1946, Otto Thaler met Elizabeth Emma Roth (1924-2013), also a native of Vienna, who had recently arrived in the United States as a “displaced person.” They were married in September 1947, just before Thaler began his third year of medical school. Otto and “Lisl” Thaler had three children: Ruth, Richard and David. Otto Thaler died of end-stage cancer at his home in Brighton, N.Y. on October 27, 1996.

Organization of the Collection

The Papers of Otto F. Thaler, M.D. are organized in six series:

Reports, Talks, Correspondence, etc. (Boxes 1-5):

This series is comprised of material generated by Thaler, such as detailed descriptions of his activities for the Dept. of Psychiatry annual report (Box 1, Folders 1-16); a small but interesting body of correspondence arranged chronologically (Box 1, Folders 17-28); transcripts of three interviews with George Libman Engel that Thaler conducted in 1993 (Box 2, Folders 1-3); detailed notes of his professional reading organized by topic (Box 2, Folder 11-Box 3, Folder 3); and talks delivered by Thaler (for the most part outside the classroom) arranged chronologically (Box 3, Folder 4-Box 5, Folder 10). There are few publications in this series, as research and publishing were not central to Thaler’s work as an educator and clinician.

Hermann Imre translation (Box 6):

In 1934 the Hungarian psychoanalyst Hermann Imre published at Vienna the first edition of Die Psychoanalyse als Methode. Thaler had a very high regard for this work and translated the entire text into English for eventual publication. Box 6 includes copies of the first and second editions of Imre’s book; Thaler’s correspondence with Imre and those who might facilitate the publication of his translation; and the translation itself. Thaler’s English-language translation of Imre’s treatise was never published.

Organizations (Boxes 7-8):

The largest and most important group of material in this series reflecting Thaler’s involvement in various organizations/societies are the files pertaining to the Western New York Psychoanalytic Society. Thaler was involved with the Society from 1957 through the mid-1990s, and served as president between 1983 and 1985.

First- and second-year psychiatry courses (Boxes 9-16)

Material pertaining to Thaler’s involvement in the first-year psychiatry course and the second-year psychosocial medicine course comprises the largest single series in the collection. These files are arranged chronologically by academic year, from 1962/63 through 1982/83. Thaler’s teaching method relied primarily on prepared lectures that he read in class. Transcripts for most of these lectures exist for most academic years. The education files may also include syllabi, reading lists, examinations, and student evaluations (labelled “Miscellanea” on the inventory).

Resident training and supervision (Boxes 17-18)

Box 17 consists entirely of transcripts of taped sessions during which Thaler discusses with residents the management of cases they have been assigned. Box 18 consists of other post-graduate teaching material.

Interviews with Patients (Boxes 19-23):

Among Thaler’s responsibilities as director of in-patient services within the Dept. of Psychiatry was to conduct a preliminary interview with newly admitted patients. Thaler taped many of these interviews – the transcripts of which are included in Boxes 19-23 (arranged alphabetically by patient name). As the information in this series is protected by Federal HIPAA legislation, this series of patient interviews in the Thaler collection is closed to the public.
