Robert J. Haggerty, M.D.

Introduction

Robert J. Haggerty, M.D.Robert J. Haggerty's career extended beyond clinical practice to a lifelong effort to promote the health of children and adolescents by establishing more effective integrated services and policies. In working toward these goals, Haggerty became internationally known through his work in academe, national and international organizations, public policy forums, and foundation management. The bulk of Dr. Haggerty’s papers were transferred to the Edward G. Miner Library between 2008 and 2010. Processing this material was completed in September 2010. Additional files were added to the collection and processed in August 2018 (Boxes 74-86). The collection is comprised of eighty-six boxes occupying sixty-six linear feet.

Biographical Data

Robert Johns Haggerty was born in Saranac Lake, N.Y. on 20 October 1925 to Gordon Abbott Haggerty (1897-1962) and Nina Belle Johns (1896-1973). He was raised in Worcester, Otsego County, N.Y., where his father, a 1920 graduate of the Albany College of Pharmacy, operated a drugstore. After graduating from Worcester High School, Haggerty attended Cornell University, where he received his B.S. (zoology) in 1946. He immediately entered Cornell University Medical College, from which he graduated in 1949. On the 29th of October that year, Haggerty married Muriel Ethel Protzmann, a 1948 graduate of the Lankenau Hospital School of Nursing (Philadelphia). They would have four children.

In 1949 Haggerty began his long association with Rochester during an internship at Strong Memorial Hospital, the teaching hospital of the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. His internship was followed by two years service as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Maxwell Airforce Base in Montgomery, Alabama. In 1953 Haggerty began a residency in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston. By 1954 he was chief medical resident at Children’s Hospital and a teaching fellow at Harvard Medical School. Haggerty would remain in Boston ten years. At Children’s Hospital he was the founding medical director of the Family Health Care Program (1955), director of the Boston Poison Information Center (1956), and senior associate in medicine. Following a Commonwealth Fund fellowship in social pediatrics at St. Mary’s Hospital (London), Haggerty was was appointed assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard (1962).

In 1964 Haggerty returned to Rochester as chairman of the Dept. of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry and pediatrician-in-chief at Strong Memorial Hospital. In 1980 Haggerty left academe to become president of the New York-based William T. During this period he was also a member of Carnegie Commission on Children (1972-77), director of the General Pediatrics & Academic Development Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (1978), clinical professor of pediatrics at Cornell University Medical College, and attending physician at the New York Hospital. After his “retirement” in 1992, Haggerty was made Professor of Pediatrics Emeritus at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry.
