Program Structure

The MD/MS is a 4+0 program: students complete 30 graduate credits across all four phases of medical education without extending the four-year timeline. Coursework is sequenced to complement the MD curriculum. Foundational content is delivered in a hybrid and largely asynchronous format, graduate seminars meet in the evenings and during the summer between the first two phases, and a culminating capstone is completed in the final year. Courses are scheduled so they do not conflict with required medical school activities.

Curriculum Highlights

  • MHB 412: Introduction to Health Humanities: a foundational, largely asynchronous course spanning the history of medicine, the biopsychosocial model, bioethics, empathy, narrative medicine, and cultural humility.
  • Graduate seminars, including MHB 420: Stories in Healthcare, MHB 472: Philosophical Foundations of Bioethics, MHB 430: Art and Medicine, and MHB 421: History of Modern Medicine.
  • The HHBe Pathway, a longitudinal four-year enrichment experience, together with required HHBe Selectives taken across the pre-clerkship phases.
  • Capstone, a mentored capstone practicum (MHB 497: Capstone Practicum) and a culminating scholarly or creative project, presented to peers and faculty.
