Emma Ciafaloni, MD, FAAN, FANA
Attending Physician
Dr. Ciafaloni is a Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of Neuromuscular Diseases in adults and children. She is Co-Director of the MDA Neuromuscular Clinic and Program Director of the ACGME Accredited Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship Program.
Her current commitments include improving the diagnosis and treatment of adult and pediatric patients with neuromuscular diseases, especially Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, ALS, limb girdle muscular dystrophies, myotonic dystrophy, FSHD, and spinal muscular atrophy. She has national and international expertise in conducting clinical trials in adult and pediatric neuromuscular diseases including Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Myasthenia Gravis, periodic paralyses, nondystrophic myotonias, myotonic dystrophy and FSHD. She has a clinical research interest in the best treatment of patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the course and outcome of pregnancy in women with muscular dystrophies, and sleep disorders in neuromuscular diseases.
Peter Creigh M.D.
Attending Physician
Dr. Creigh completed his neurology residency training at the University of Rochester and is now a clinical neuromuscular fellow. He has a broad clinical interest within the field of neuromuscular medicine, treating all types of neuromuscular diseases. Additional, he is actively involved in neuromuscular clinical research and will be pursuing additional training in experiential therapeutics in the coming year.
Johanna Hamel, M.D.
Attending Physician
Johanna Hamel, MD completed medical school at the Martin-Luther-University in Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher studying visual cognition at the Charité in Berlin, Germany. She completed neurology residency at the University of Rochester in June 2016 and is currently a neuromuscular fellow. Her research interests include muscular dystrophies, in specific myotonic dystrophy type 1 and type 2 and nutritional neuropathies.
Chad Heatwole, M.D., MS-C1
Attending Physician
Chad Heatwole, MD, MS-CI is a neuromuscular clinician and researcher from the University of Rochester. He has an engineering degree from Virginia Tech, a medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, a master's degree in clinical investigation, and has completed a University of Rochester neurology residency, electrophysiology fellowship, and NIH-funded neuromuscular experimental therapeutics fellowship. His research funding has included a National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases K23 award, a Muscular Dystrophy Association TRIG award, and a New York State ECRIP award (among other awards).
David N. Herrmann, M.B.B.Ch.
Attending Physician
Dr. Herrmann is a Professor of Neurology and Pathology, who specializes in the diagnosis and management of peripheral neuropathies. He is Unit Chief of the Neuromuscular Unit, Director of the University of Rochester (UR) Peripheral Neuropathy Clinic, and Cutaneous Innervation Laboratory, the UR Inherited Neuropathies Consortium Rare Disease Clinical Research Center and Chief of the Neuromuscular Disease Center. He has a clinical and research focus in Charcot Marie Tooth neuropathies (CMT), including outcome measures and biomarker developments and clinical trials of new therapies.
Eric L. Logigian, M.D.
Director
Dr. Logigian is Program Director of the Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship and Director of the EMG lab at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He also serves on the editorial board of Muscle & Nerve, a major neuromuscular journal. His research focus is primarily on electrodiagnostic methods for quantitative evaluation of patients with neuromuscular disorders particularly focal and generalized polyneuropathies. His clinical focus is in evaluation and treatment of patients with acquired polyneuropathies.
Sam Mackenzie, M.D., Ph.D.
Senior Instructor, Department of Neurology
Dr. Mackenzie a clinician-scientist specializing in the treatment of genetic neuromuscular disorders affecting children and young adults. His specific research interests include somatic instability in myotonic dystrophy and loss-of-function conditions amenable to gene replacement therapy. In addition to his work in the lab, he oversees the clinic for patients with limb-girdle muscular dystrophies, performs EMG studies, and attends on the inpatient child neurology service. He completed his MD-PhD training at Upstate Medical University before pursuing residency training in child neurology at The University of Michigan and fellowship training in neuromuscular medicine at The Ohio State University and Nationwide Children's Hospital. He joined the faculty at The University of Rochester in 2021.
Phillip Mongiovi, M.D.
Attending Physician
Dr. Mongiovi completed medical school at the Ohio State University College of Medicine and neurology residency training at the University of Rochester. He is currently completing a fellowship in neuromuscular medicine and will begin as faculty in July 2019. He has a broad clinical interest within the field of neuromuscular medicine, treating all types of neuromuscular diseases. His current academic interests include neuromuscular ultrasound and electrodiagnostic studies.
Michael Stanton, M.D.
Attending Physician
Dr. Stanton is Associate Professor of Neurology in the Neuromuscular division at the University of Rochester Medical Center. His clinical interests are in peripheral neuropathy and electrodiagnostic techniques. He is actively involved in teaching neuromuscular fellows in electrodiagnosis and peripheral neuropathy. He is co-investigator for the CMT database which characterizes the clinical and electrodiagnostic features of hereditary neuropathy. He has subspecialty board certifications in neuromuscular disease by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry, and in electrodiagnostic medicine by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

Our EMG technicians are experienced and fully trained. They are always available to help patients.
If you have questions about EMG, our administrative staff are always available. They can help you with flexible scheduling options. In addition, three or four fellows or resident physicians are on staff.
Michele Ferguson
Clinical Technologist
Michele Ferguson has worked in the Neuromuscular Disease Center since 1999 and is currently the assistant supervisor of the EMG lab. She performs routine and complex nerve conduction studies on children and adults. She graduated from Niagara County Community College in 1998 with an Associate’s degree in Electroneurodiagnostic Technology. She then became a registered EMG tech in 2003. She has served on the AAET national EMG tech board as secretary treasurer and on the examination committee.
Julie Thon
Clinical Technologist
Julie Thon has worked in the Neuromuscular Disease Center since 2015. She received her bachelor’s in Health Science Studies from Quinnipiac University in 2012. She performs nerve conductions studies on adults and children with neuromuscular disease.
