The Department of Neurology is a clinical department founded in 1966 at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. The department has an incredible history that provides a foundation of collegiality, growth, mentorship and inclusiveness. The past great leaders of this department include Dr. Robert J. Joynt (View Dr. Joynt's CV) (1966-1986), Dr. Robert C. Griggs (1987-2008), and Dr. Steven A. Goldman (2008-2012) and their legacy is nothing short of awe-inspiring. It is from their inspiration and all the great neurologists that contributed to our past successes that we continue to pursue our dreams to Learn, Discover, Heal, Create - and Make the World Ever Better for patients with neurological disease.
The department has consistently ranked among one of the top departments in the country in terms of research dollars from the National Institutes of Health and is consistently ranked by the US News & World Report in their annual rankings. The department's continued success in this highly competitive arena attests to the quality and impact of the research performed by its faculty.
UR Neurology is a recognized leader for developing superior clinicians and scientists and has developed a national reputation for excellence in residency training in adult and child neurology and numerous subspecialties. The department is rich with dedicated faculty, an outstanding blend of academic and clinical training, exposure to nationally-recognized specialists and a supportive environment provide residents with the opportunity to truly excel in their fields.
The training and education of residents are integral components of the department. Residency is a formative time for young physicians. During these years residents learn not only the basics of patient care, but also leadership skills, research methods, cross cultural competence, professionalism, and communication skills. In addition, residents form critical relationships with mentors who will help them realize their potential. As a result, our Residency and Fellowship Programs are home to the top residents in the country.
