Other tumors near the pituitary or hypothalamus

There are a large number of other tumors that can grow in or near the pituitary gland or hypothalamus. A partial list includes:

• Rathke’s cleft cyst
• Pars intermedia cyst
• Epidermoid tumor
• Colloid cyst
• Chordoma
• Meningioma
• Metastatic tumors (cancer from somewhere else in the body)

There are also inflammatory disorders and infections that can affect the pituitary gland and hypothalamus. Any or all of these can mimic the more common pituitary tumors discussed elsewhere, and like any tumor in the pituitary gland, making the right diagnosis and proceeding with the best treatment requires advice from a multidisciplinary team of experts.
