Comprehensive Facial Pain/Trigeminal Neuralgia/Hemifacial Spasm

Facial Pain is very common, experienced by nearly one quarter of adult Americans. There are many types/causes of facial pain, such as shingles (Post-herpetic neuralgia), trigeminal neuropathy (after injury to the face, jaw or teeth), TMJ pain, cluster headaches, and Trigeminal Neuralgia. Trigeminal neuralgia (also called tic douloureux) is very painful condition affecting the trigeminal nerve, which delivers sensation to the face and surface of the eye. Symptoms include severe, sharp episodes of facial pain on one side of the face, affecting one or more divisions of the trigeminal nerve, often precipitated by talking, chewing, eating, washing, brushing teeth, shaving, wind, and other tactile stimuli.

Our team of neurologists and neurosurgeons with expertise in pain have the ability to help you with all types of facial pain. At the Comprehensive Facial Pain/Trigeminal Neuralgia Program, our team of medical and surgical experts work together to fully assess your pain and provide all options (medical, surgical, or a combination) in a comprehensive treatment paradigm. Our goal is to get you on the road to an improved quality of life, where pain no longer dominates your day.

A rare condition called hemifacial spasm can cause uncontrolled twitching of one side of the face. In some cases, microvascular decompression surgery can be curative. Our neurosurgeons and neurologists have the expertise to diagnose and manage this condition. Our surgical team (comprised of fellow-ship trained microvascular neurosurgeons, neurologists with expertise in intraoperative monitoring of cranial nerves, and neuroanesthesiologists) together perform more microvascular decompression surgeries than anyone else in Western New York.

Research

Percutaneous Rhizotomy using biplane angiosuite

This research has shown better and faster procedures are possible when percutaneous rhizotomy is performed in a high resolution biplane angiography suite rather than traditional operating rooms. Learn more.
