Highland Hosts "Healthy Aging and Nutrition" Event at Mario's Italian Steakhouse Oct. 18

Nutrition plays a vital role in aging well and living longer. Members of the community are invited to learn how they can eat sensibly and still enjoy food as they get older at the seminar, "Healthy Aging and Nutrition." Presented by William Hall, M.D., the director of Highland’s Center for Healthy Aging, and geriatrician Krupa Shah, M.B.B.S., M.P.H., the event will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 at Mario’s Italian Steakhouse, 2740 Monroe Ave. Admission is $5 and includes buffet dinner and seminar. Dr. Hall says nutrition is a key component of aging successfully. Obesity, which has become more prevalent in older populations in the last 20 years, is a major contributor of other health problems, including diabetes, heart disease and fractures.
"We need to be selective of what our calories are composed of," Dr. Hall said. "We are going to offer people practical suggestions on how to keep weight off, how to reduce salt intake, and how to make them feel healthier as they get older."
Participants will learn new ways to prepare foods and recipes. They will also be treated to a healthy buffet-style dinner at Mario’s.
"If people are sensible about what they’re eating on a daily basis," Dr. Hall said, "then they can reward themselves once in a while and go out to eat."
Dr. Hall, co-author of the book Taking Charge of Your Health: A Guide to Getting the Best Health Care as You Age, has made healthy aging a focus of his practice for 30 years and has served on the board of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) for six years. Dr. Shah has published several studies related to diet and exercise in older adults. She recently received the Merck/American Geriatric Society New Investigator Award for her outstanding work in geriatric education and research.
