Medical School Dean Receives National Honor

Lowell A. Goldsmith, M.D., dean of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, was recently honored by the National Alopecia Areata Foundation for his service on the NAAFÕs medical advisory board. An award was presented to him at the NAAFÕs 15th anniversary celebration in San Francisco.A dermatologist and former chair of the Department of Dermatology at the medical school, Dr. Goldsmith has helped guide the NAAFÕs research agenda and has organized international research workshops on alopecia areata.Dr. Goldsmith currently serves as an advisor to both the NAAF chairman and the NAAF chief executive officer as well as vice-chair of NAAFÕs medical advisory board. His research interests in epidermal structural proteins and keratins and in genetic disorders of the skin and his scientific leadership are described as Òinvaluable to the NAAF.ÓAlopecia areata is a common condition that results in the loss of hair on the scalp and elsewhere; it appears in males and females of all ages, though young persons are affected most often. Although alopecia areata is medically benign, it can be psychologically devastating.

Prior to joining the Rochester faculty, Dr. Goldsmith was on the dermatology faculty at Duke University and at Harvard University.
