Midtown Athletic Club 'Ride on the Roof' Benefits Wilmot Cancer Center

Tuesday, April 18, 2006

Bicyclists will get a unique view of Rochester and “Ride on the Roof” at Midtown Athletic Club to raise funds for the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center on Thursday, May 4. The event kicks off Trek bicycle weekend and is the first of two bicycling events to support the Finger Lakes region’s largest cancer center.

Thespinning class, beginning at 4 p.m., will be held atop the roof of the East Highland Drive athletic club, which overlooks the old Can of Worms. Participants will bring their own bikes and use a stationary trainer during the class.   Riders don’t need to be a member of Midtown Athletic Club to participate.  The cost for “Ride on the Roof” is $25.

On May 5, bicyclists can participate in an interactive ride through the nation of Greece, in “Road to Athens.” And on Saturday, May 6, Trek bicycles will be on display at Midtown and champion mountain bike stunt rider Mike Stiedley will perform two exhibitions, at 1 and 4 p.m.

Throughout the series of events, a Grand Vitara, courtesy of Marketplace Suzuki, will be on display at the club.  The vehicle will be filled with all sorts of balls – baseballs, basketballs, footballs and tennis balls – and people can enter to win a Trek bicycle, worth $800, by guessing the number of balls in the car.  To participate, call (585) 461-2300.

The second bicycling event to support the Wilmot Cancer Center is the Saturn Rochester Twilight Criterium, a national-level professional bicycling race set for Saturday, June 24.

The Criterium features a series of short races through the streets of downtown Rochester, culminating with the 8:30 p.m. Men’s Pro Race. Professional teams from throughout the world, including former Olympic gold medalist Marty Nothstein, will endure the two-hour race.
