Ugly, but Envisioning a Bright Future
Wednesday, May 10, 2006
Your summer weekends are probably booking up already, so you’ll want to hurry up and pencil this one in before it’s too late: Rochester’s Ten Ugly Men Festival’s “King of Ugly” event, held from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 22 in Genesee Valley Park.
The day packs a full line-up of dodgeball, bocce, volleyball and kickball tournaments, a 5K race, performances by local bands, and kids’ activities (inflatable toys and slip-and-slide). Plus, as you’re munching on all-you-can-eat ice cream and chicken sandwiches and dancing to the beat of the best bands in Rochester, you’ll have that feel-good glow of knowing that your ticket helps to support the Bright Eyes Fund for pediatric brain tumor treatment at Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong.
“This is the second year we’re supporting this sort of cancer research,” said John Fitzsimmons, Rochester-area attorney and one of the so-called “Uglies” who has been involved in planning the festival for 14 years. Fitzsimmons’ connection to the charity is a personal one: back in May of 2000, his wife, Kimberly, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and passed away in February of 2003. “Her doctor, David Korones, M.D., treats both pediatric and adult patients at Strong, and since my wife loved kids, giving back to The Bright Eyes Fund was a perfect fit,” Fitzsimmons said.
This year, only a limited amount of tickets are available, so you’ll want to buy in advance ($30 for adults, $10 for kids between 11 and 17 years old, kids 10 years old and younger are free). Admission includes all food and non-alcoholic refreshments; adult tickets also include 6 tickets each which may be redeemed for beer or wine (extra tickets for alcoholic beverages may be purchased at $2 each).
Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong’s Bright Eyes Fund is a co-beneficiary of the event, which will also donate funds to The St. John’s Neighborhood Center.
