Heart Experts to Offer Advice at Second Opinion Health Conference

Senator Jim Alesi will serve as honorary chair of this conference about heart health that features keynote speaker Peter Salgo, M.D., practicing physician at Columbia University Medical Center and host of the national health care series “Second Opinion.”

In addition to health screenings, a heart-healthy lunch and giveaways, the conference will feature six breakout sessions presented by experts from the Strong Heart & Vascular Center at the University of Rochester, each centered on developing communication skills to better deal with health care providers. Louis Papa, M.D., will discuss non-negotiating rules of doctor-patient communications. Geoffrey Morris, M.D., will explain how to get a second opinion. Gladys Velarde, M.D., and Peter Knight, M.D., will talk about heart disease prevention and intervention. Mark Taubman, M.D., chief of Cardiology, will discuss the latest research in heart disease. John Bisognano, M.D., Ph.D., and Laurie Kopin, N.P., will explain how to interpret blood pressure, cholesterol count and body-mass index numbers. Mary Beth Klofas and Marilyn Rosen will offer tips on how to evaluate health information on the Internet in a hands-on session.

The Second Opinion Health Conference was inspired by the national health care series “Second Opinion,” which is produced by WXXI, the University of Rochester Medical Center and West 175 Productions, and funded by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.The weekly series, seen on more than 200 PBS stations across the country, engages nationally recognized health care professionals and patients in a fast-paced, provocative discussion of real-life medical cases. “Second Opinion” airs on WXXI-TV21 (cable 11) at 3 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
