18th annual Ten Ugly Men Festival Helps Children, Seeks Volunteers

Tuesday, July 03, 2007

Rochester’s renowned 18th annual Ten Ugly Men Festival, held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 28, in GeneseeValley Park, will benefit the Bright Eyes Fund for pediatric brain tumor treatment at Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong, along with other local charities and community organizations, including Wilson Commencement Park, EquiCenter and the Boys & Girls Club of Rochester.

“This is the third year we’re supporting this sort of cancer research,” said John Fitzsimmons, Rochester-area attorney and one of the so-called “Uglies” who has been involved in planning the festival for 15 years. Fitzsimmons’ connection to the charity is a personal one: back in May of 2000, his wife, Kimberly, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. She passed away in February of 2003. “Her doctor, David Korones (M.D.), treats both pediatric and adult patients at Strong; since my wife adored kids, giving back to the Bright Eyes Fund is a perfect fit,” Fitzsimmons said.

The day packs a full lineup of dodgeball, bocce, volleyball and kickball tournaments, a 5K race, performances by local bands, kids’ activities, plus all-you-can-eat ice cream and chicken sandwiches.

Volunteers representing the children’s hospital are still needed; those who serve a three-hour shift receive free admission to the rest of the event and a Golisano Children's Hospital t-shirt. Posts include selling drink tickets, directing parking, helping to run children’s activities and supporting registration and check in. To help, send your address and phone number to Jen Montana,

Only a limited amount of tickets are available ($30 for adults, $10 for kids between 11 and 17 years old, kids 10 years old and younger are free). Admission includes all food and non-alcoholic refreshments; adult tickets also include 6 tickets each which may be redeemed for beer or wine.
