Fairport’s Music and Food Fest Serves up Cuisine, Tunes, Charity

3-year-old canalside festival benefits Golisano Children's Hospital

Thursday, July 26, 2007

Liftbridge Lane buzzes with Fairport families. In the two years since its inception, the Fairport Music and Food Festival has raised more than $43,000 for Golisano Children's Hospital.

Fairport’s 3rd annual Music and Food Fest, an end of summer celebration known for its unique fusion of favorite local eats and musical acts, will be held noon to dark Saturday, Aug. 25, along Liftbridge Lane (just north of the canal, off Main Street).

As always, all festival proceeds will benefit ill and injured kids at Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong. Last year’s event garnered an impressive $30,000.

“Fairport is an extremely family-oriented community,” said Andy McDermott, who coordinates the festival with Rob Burch. “The whole day is steeped in generosity – the musicians donate their talent, the man who sells cotton candy turns over his profits, it all comes back to the children.”

This year’s festival promises more than a dozen bands, including Brass Taxi, Burning Daylight, The Campbell Brothers, Uncle Plum, Mint Jam and Northside Johnny. Local restaurants will showcase “A Taste of Fairport,” selling samples of their signature dishes ranging from frozen coffee to pulled pork to lobster rolls.

Children’s activities are free and include face painting, clowns and Rock Ventures, plus performances by Chris Wilkinson (The Magic Guy), the Dinner Dogs and the Boomerang Club.

Hospital wristbands serve as festival admission and can be purchased at most Fairport area restaurants, taverns and shops ($10 each in advance, $15 if purchased the day of the event). Kids 12 and younger are free.
