For Men Only: A Day of Information for Healthy Aging
University of Rochester Medical Center sponsors Men’s Health Day – Time Out for Your Health
Monday, August 25, 2008
It has usually been the women in their lives observing that men often do not make the connection between developing a healthy game plan and sticking to it, in order to enjoy good health in later years.
The University of Rochester Medical Center is hoping to change that by helping men make health a priority through its fourth annual Men’s Health Day - Time Out for Your Health. The free event will be held from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, in the Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building at the Medical Center.
More than a dozen top specialists in men’s health will lead discussions in sessions titled, “Winning Strategies: Maintaining Good Prostate Health,” “Stay in the Game: Healthy Heart, Mind and Body”, “Your Winning Playbook for Healthy Joints,” “Creative Resilience and Aging: Duke Ellington’s Artistry in his Later Years,” “No Pain, No Gain? Eliminating the Myth,” and “The Aging Athlete.” Participants will get to meet the experts and join breakout sessions to discuss session-related topics. Also on the agenda: a healthy breakfast and lunch, and an opportunity to participate in hands-on demonstrations of robotic surgery and automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
“Life expectancy for many men in this country lags far behind men living in several other countries,” said event organizer and Associate Professor of Urology and Oncology Jean Joseph, M.D. “Some try to explain these discrepancies as a result of risky behavior, but, others suggest that men grow up being told they are invincible, indestructible and strong. Whatever the reason, we are working to turn things around for men here in Rochester.”
The event is free but space is limited. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (585) 275-2838. Reservation deadline is Friday, Sept. 5. Free parking is also available at 300 East River Road at the University of Rochester Advancement and Alumni Center and shuttle service from the parking lot to the Kornberg building will be provided.
Men’s Health Day is presented by University Urology, the Strong Heart and Vascular Center,URMC Orthopaedics, the Evarts Joint Center at Highland Hospital and the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center. Additional information can be found at www.menshealth.urmc.edu.
