Students Take Part in MASH Camp to Learn about Healthcare Careers

Medical Academy of Science and Health Debuts at URMC and Nazareth College

Tuesday, April 8, 2003

Students entering seventh and eighth grades are getting some hands-on experience in various healthcare professions this week through the Medical Academy of Science & Health, or as it is affectionately termed, MASH Camp. The first time held in the area, the five-day camp aims to educate students about various professions in the healthcare industry and to give them hands-on experience in these areas through fun activities and interaction with local healthcare professionals.

According to Gail Ingersoll, Ed.D., RN, FAAN, and director of clinical nursing research at the University of Rochester Medical Center, it’s important to keep young children interested and excited about careers in healthcare.

“Many areas in healthcare are grappling with worker shortages right now or in the immediate future. Add to this an aging demographic who will rely on the healthcare industry like no other generation, and there is a pressing need to maintain a steady flow of workers,” Ingersoll said. “In addition, it’s important that today’s kids realize there are so many more career options in healthcare beyond becoming a doctor or nurse.”

The five-day schedule includes three days at Strong Memorial Hospital and two at Nazareth College. While at Strong, students will meet with various professionals, take a tour of the hospital's helicopter pad and a Rural Metro ambulance, and gain an overview of basic first aid techniques. In addition, they will each participate in a mock emergency code episode, where they will go through the steps involved in resuscitating a pre-programmed human dummy. At Nazareth, students will interact with teachers and students enrolled in the art, dance and music therapy programs. All MASH campers will become certified in First Aid.

MASH Camp is sponsored by the Monroe County School Business Partnership, the Rural Area Health Education Center, University of Rochester Medical Center and Nazareth College.
