21st Annual Gala Packs Big Surprises, Raises Nearly $500,000 for Area Children

Two airplane hangars were transformed into an elegant setting for a black-tie event at the 21st annual Golisano Children's Hospital Gala.
The economic downturn did not hamper funds raised for children at this year’s Golisano Children’s Hospital Gala. The children’s hospital’s biggest fundraising evening of the year raised almost $500,000 with close to 800 guests on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the USAirports Hangar on Scottsville Road.
That night, an elegant black-tie event was held in a most interesting venue – two aircraft hangars were transformed into an elegant setting. This year’s Gala highlighted and celebrated the many advances that have been made at Golisano Children’s Hospital thanks to the tremendous support of our community. “Each year, we aim to outdo the last, and we credit the success to our magic motivators – our community’s own children,” said Howie Jacobson, chair of the event and of Golisano Children Hospital’s fundraising board.
Generous donors purchased items from Golisano Children’s Hospital Wish List and bid for items in a silent and live auction to benefit pediatric patients. One of the largest gifts of the night was a physio-control defibrillator, which Board Member Roger B. Friedlander purchased for the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). There was also a lot of buzz throughout the night about Philip Gelsomino II’s donations from the wish list.
The evening dazzled attendees with sumptuous food, spectacular auction prizes, live music from rock and roller Nik Lite, and an exciting new surprise: an acrobatic aerial show. Best of all, the event gave attendees the supreme satisfaction of knowing that even the night’s tiniest details were helping Rochester’s smallest patients get better.
Kim McCluski, an executive committee board member for Golisano Children’s Hospital, walked away with an especially big surprise –a 2008 Hyundai Elantra GLS, courtesy of Hyundai, Vision Hyundai of Rochester and Canandaigua and Fucillo Hyundai. Despite having bought many tickets for family members, McCluski won the car with the one ticket she bought for herself.
This year’s Gala was largely thanks to the generosity of our new presenting sponsor, The Cabot Group, a local real estate services firm. For more information on opportunities to donate to Golisano Children’s Hospital, please contact the Advancement office at (585) 273-5948.
