Catherine Thomas, M.S.W., has joined the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center as volunteer coordinator and director of the patient education center.
“Catherine possesses a unique quality of having extensive experience in the human services field along with a great ability to connect with staff and volunteers. We are glad to have her on our team,” says Catherine Lyons, M.S., R.N., C.N.A.A., associate director for cancer services.
Thomas leads Wilmot Cancer Center’s team of 50 volunteers and assists in patient education efforts. She has a strong background in social work and spent many years serving at risk youth at a variety of Rochester area organizations. Thomas was previously with Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth.
She is working with volunteers and staff to help streamline operations to improve services for patients and support the efforts of Wilmot’s doctors and nurses. Over the next year, she plans to build a larger, diverse team of volunteers and generate greater use of the Luellen Patient and Family Resource Center.
“We have an impressive collection of multimedia materials for patients and family members to learn more about their disease and support programs,” Thomas says. “I’d like to see every patient take advantage of the many resources offered.”
Thomas, a graduate of SUNY Brockport, earned a master’s degree in social work at Syracuse University. She is active in many Rochester area organizations and serves on the board of directors for Cameron Community Ministries, Youth in Charge of Positive Thinking, and Cyclones Football. She is a member of the Lakeshore- Rochester Kiwanis Club.
