Thursday, December 04, 2008
An inaugural ceremony to mark the investiture of nationally recognized sleep disorders researcher Kathy Parker, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., as dean of the University of Rochester School of Nursing takes place at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, in the School’s Loretta C. Ford Education Wing Auditorium.
Parker, one of only five nurses in the country certified in Clinical Sleep Disorders by the American Board of Sleep Medicine, focuses her research on how the cycle of sleeping and waking is disturbed in patients with chronic illnesses and looks at developing population-specific treatments. She also studies sleep in cancer patients with pain. She was named the fourth dean of the School of Nursing in July following an extensive national search.
Before coming to Rochester, Parker served as the Edith F. Honeycutt Professor of Nursing in the Department of Family and Community Nursing at Emory University’s Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing in Atlanta. With over 20 years of clinical practice experience, she is certified as both an adult nurse practitioner and a medical/surgical clinical nurse specialist.
Parker received her undergraduate degree in nursing from Columbia University, her master’s in nursing from Emory University, and her doctorate in nursing from Georgia State University. She is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the Sleep Research Society, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Parker has served on the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Sleep Medicine and Research. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Nursing, and has over 100 journal articles, abstracts and proceedings to her credit.
Bradford C. Berk, M.D., Ph.D., senior vice president for health sciences and CEO of the University of Rochester Medical Center, will preside over the investiture ceremony. Other speakers will include Joel Seligman, president of the University of Rochester, Ralph W. Kuncl, Ph.D., M.D., provost and executive vice president of the University, Edmund A Hajim, chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees, and Robert H.
