URMC Expert to Give Free Talk on New Ways to Treat Kidney Stones
Erdal Erturk, M.D., professor of Urology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, will present a free talk from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 13, at the Hahnemann Club, 201 Stoutenberg Lane, located on the campus of The Highlands at Pittsford, off of Rt. 31, just east of the village of Pittsford.
Kidney stones are a common medical problem affecting men and women of any age or race. A significant number of hospital admissions are due to kidney stone disease, causing significant pain and morbidity. “There is evidence that the incidence of stone disease is rising in the Western world,” Erturk said. “This may be in part due to increased obesity, lack of exercise and a diet high in fat. Surgical treatment is generally noninvasive and aimed at removing the stone and relieving the patient’s pain and suffering. There has been significant progress made in this regard.”
Erturk’s presentation will briefly discuss the minimally invasive treatment of kidney stones, address their signs and symptoms, as well as discuss treatment options currently available. Evaluation and medical management of patients with kidney stones will also be reviewed.
The talk, titled “No Stone Left Unturned,” is fourth in the 10-part health and wellness series, “To Your Health!.” Presented by The Highlands at Pittsford and the University of Rochester Medical Center, the series aims to inspire and educate older adults about health issues specific to their needs. The programs are taught by URMC’s faculty of distinguished physicians and other providers affiliated with Strong Memorial Hospital, Highland Hospital, the Eastman Dental Center, Visiting Nurse Service and other Medical Center affiliates.
Seating is limited. To register for the talk, please call (585) 275-2838.
