Wellness is Focus of Senior Living Community’s Renovations

The Highlands at Pittsford, a senior living community affiliated with the University of Rochester, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, will celebrate the ground-breaking for a $4.8 million expansion, the highlight of which is a two-story Health and Wellness Center. Slated to open in May 2012, it will be home to The Highlands’ life-long wellness program, the first of its kind in the Rochester area.
With the new facilities as its centerpiece, The Highlands will launch its focus on the Seven Dimensions of Wellness, an approach endorsed by the International Council on Active Aging that recognizes that wellness extends beyond exercise and healthy eating. The Seven Dimensions include: emotional, intellectual, physical, vocational, social, spiritual and environmental wellness.
To implement this wellness philosophy, The Highlands appointed Judy Sims, a registered nurse with more than 25 years of experience in senior living communities, as its Health and Wellness Center director. Sims will develop programming aimed at supporting overall wellness for residents and build upon established efforts such as the UR Always Learning and To Your Health lecture series featuring University of Rochester faculty.
Included in the expansion will be a therapy pool, a fitness center with changing rooms, a juice bar, spa treatment rooms, a salon, and an auditorium. The Highlands’ main dining room will be relocated to the expansion and will overlook a courtyard with water features. In addition, Laurelwood, The Highlands’ assisted living community, will undergo some renovations.
“Wellness and its many aspects have long been a part of the forward-thinking Highlands community,” said Highlands Executive Director Lloyd Theiss. “We look forward to bringing our residents an innovative Health and Wellness Center as the focal point of wellness initiatives that are at the heart and soul of independent living and assisted living at The Highlands.”
