About Nurse Practitioners
University of Rochester School of Nursing founding dean Dr. Loretta C. Ford co-developed the first nurse practitioner model at the University of Colorado in 1965. NPs have graduate, advanced education and clinical training beyond their registered nurse preparation, and are able to diagnose and treat a wide range of health problems. Today there are 140,000 nurse practitioners in the U.S. The University of Rochester Medical Center currently employs more than 400. Close to 9,000 new NPs are prepared each year at more than 325 colleges and universities. Besides clinical care, NPs focus on health promotion, disease prevention, health education and counseling. NPs are currently licensed in all states and the District of Columbia, and practice under the rules and regulations in the state in which they are licensed.
