URMC Neuroradiologist J. Scott Thomson, M.D., Dies

J. Scott Thomson, M.D., instructor of Imaging Sciences’ Division of Neuroradiology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, died suddenly Nov. 24. He was 42.

Thomson has been a part of the URMC faculty for nearly two years. 

“He split his time in neuroradiology between Strong and Highland Hospital,” said David Waldman, M.D., Ph.D., chair of Imaging Sciences. “He was a very hard-working, dedicated physician who put patients first, always.”

He grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Houghton College. He studied medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and completed a neurology residency and fellowship at University of Pittsburgh.

Thomson initially pursued a career in neurology and practiced a few years in New Jersey before the specialized field of neuroradiology piqued his interest. He came to Rochester for additional training in Imaging Sciences. He completed a radiology residency at Rochester General Hospital and then a fellowship in neuroradiology at URMC.

He was an accomplished woodworker who enjoyed searching for interesting hardwoods and tools as much as the projects themselves. He also enjoyed traveling.

Thomson is survived by his parents and siblings, including Robert Thomson, M.D., of Rochester, and several nieces and nephews.
