Tuesday, March 13, 2012
Joseph Fantuzzo, D.D.S., M.D., has been appointed Chair of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Eastman Institute for Oral Health at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
He is well known to his colleagues, residents and patients as an accomplished and caring surgeon who performs complex and advanced oral and maxillofacial surgery, and as an outstanding educator and academic faculty member. He brings dedication, enthusiasm and vision to this role.
Dr. Fantuzzo received his D.D.S. degree in 1998, his M.D. degree in 2001, and completed an Oral and Maxillofacial Program in 2004, all from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He then completed a fellowship in craniofacial surgery at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in 2005. Following the fellowship he joined the faculty at the University of Rochester and was appointed program director of the OMFS Residency Program.
Lee Pollan, D.M.D., M.S., who has served as interim program director on and off since 1980, and interim chair of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery since 2003, has joined the faculty on a full time basis and brought his practice into the University Dental Faculty Practice Group.
“We owe Dr. Pollan a great debt of gratitude for his dedication and leadership of the OMFS division and residency program for many years,” said Cyril Meyerowitz, D.D.S., director, Eastman Institute for Oral Health. “During his tenure, he maintained and strengthened the division and, together with Dr. Fantuzzo, enhanced an already excellent OMFS residency program. This program received full accreditation, with no citations, at its last site visit in 2011.”
Dr. Pollan is a dental graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and received his oral surgery certificate from Georgetown University in 1974. He joined the faculty as a part time attending in 1975 and has been a stalwart of the program since then. A pinnacle of his career was when he served as president of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from 2007 to 2008.
