Hulin Wu to Lead New Bioinformatics Center
Hulin Wu, Ph.D., Dean’s Professor of Biostatistics and Computational Biology, will serve as founding director of the newly-established Center for Integrative Bioinformatics and Experimental Mathematics. The Center will reside within the Department of Biostatistics and Computational Biology and will serve as the academic home for bioinformatics, integrating and strengthening current biostatistics, bioinformatics and computational biology resources.
Initially, the Center will serve researchers conducting basic science experiments, clinical studies and translational research in immunology and infectious diseases. As advances in technology continue to increase the complexity and volume of data generated for biomedical research, the Center will develop sophisticated techniques and approaches to manage, analyze and extract meaningful information from such data.
The Center will support programs such as the NIH-funded Center for Biodefense Immune Modeling, which Wu directs in partnership with Martin Zand, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Medicine, the Respiratory Pathogens Research Center, the Center of Excellence in Influenza Research and Surveillance, the Developmental Center for AIDS Research and the Rochester Human Immunology Center.
In addition to providing consulting services, Wu will lead Center faculty – most of who will have primary appointments in the Department of Biostatistics and Computational Biology, but may include adjunct faculty from other departments as well – in building a strong interdisciplinary research program and attracting external funding, in particular large center grants and program grants in bioinformatics, computational biology and systems biology. A PhD/MS education program in bioinformatics and computational biology is also slated for development.
