Cheshire A/V Golf Fundraiser in Full Swing
Fundraiser Benefits Music Therapy Program at Golisano Children’s Hospital
Tuesday, June 19, 2012
For the past five years, Cheshire A/V has held the Cheshire Golf Classic to raise funds for the Kirch Center at Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center. A portion of their donation supports music therapy for Kirch patients.
Using the calming power of music, Golisano Children’s Hospital’s music therapy specialists work with children and adolescents with developmental disabilities and movement disorders receiving specialized care in the outpatient clinic. Children practice therapeutic exercises, such as, singing, listening to music, playing instruments, lyric analysis, songwriting, improvisation and music-assisted relaxation.
Trained music therapy specialists, such as Rosemary Obi, work with patients and their caregivers before, during, and after the procedure. Some patients like Dionna Peck, even request that Obi be present at every visit to make things run more smoothly. Dionna’s mother, Donna Peck, said music therapy has radically changed the dynamics of their visits and keeps her daughter aware of both the procedure, and the music.
“The difference is that the therapy never tries to trick the patient, but rather it is used as a coping mechanism to help numb the pain,” Peck said.
Obi is thrilled that Cheshire A/V sees the value in the work that they do and that they are able to put together this fundraiser year after year. “Music therapy services are provided at Golisano Children’s Hospital at no cost to our families, so having support from fundraisers like the Cheshire A/V Golf Tournament is crucial to being able to continue serving our patients. I am very thankful for their support," said Obi.
Justin Cheshire, director of sales and business development for Cheshire A/V and organizer of the event is excited to move forward with this year’s Golf Classic. “We’re really excited to raise awareness both for the Music Therapy program and the Kirch Center in any way that we can and I’m happy that we’ve been able to put together this event every year,” Cheshire said.
Registration for this year’s Cheshire Golf Classic begins at 8 a.m. on June 25 at the Mill Creek Club, 128 Cedars Ave., Churchville. Cost to play is $125 per person or $500 for a team of four.
